Born in 1850, Stevenson studied law and engineering at Edinburgh University, though he never practiced in either field. Suffering from tuberculosis for most of his life, he travelled extensively, settled in Samoa in 1890, and died in 1894.
A number of other Stevenson tales are filled with supernatural and fantastic elements, including Arabian Nights (1882) and The Body-Snatcher (1884).
